The Mounted Section is part of the Specialist Enforcement & Operations Portfolio of the Western Australia Police.
With a current authorised strength of 22 officers, about 20 experienced patrol horses and young horses in training, today's Mounted Section offers a different style of policing to when it first began here in Perth, in 1834.
Our staff are drawn from serving WA Police and particular emphasis is placed on recruiting officers with frontline operational experience. Horse riding/handling skills are desirable but not essential.
The roles of our Mounted Police
Mounted Police is predominantly focussed on addressing anti-social behaviour in Northbridge and other entertainment precincts in Western Australia.
The officers and horses are highly visible and effective in preventing disturbances and providing support to frontline officers where needed.
We also perform the following roles:
- patrols in regional Western Australia
- suburban patrols
- bush searches for missing persons and evidence
- beach patrols at known trouble spots
- public marches and demonstrations
- School Leavers' events
- ceremonial duties such as the Anzac Day Parade and VIP escorts that now account for less than 0.5% of our time
